Whenever Tom Hanks did a serious historical picture in the 90's, he also followed it with x-producing a series for HBO--In this case "From the Earth to the Moon", a very good drama series exploring one Apollo mission in each episode. (13's concentrates on the press dealing with coverage ethics.) By 15 & 16, it's pretty clear we'd done all we needed to do, and it reportedly cost a million dollars for every minute the astronauts were outside, so surface missions had to be short. As for colonizing other planets, the Moon and Mars both have the problem that the lack of gravity (from their size and lack of lava core) also makes it hard to retain an atmosphere, making terra-forming the stuff of science fiction.

2021-09-10 22:05:34 +0000 UTCNot everyone has that explorer spirit. You mentioned that you never wanted to be an astronaut or have any inclination to go to the moon. Me neither. But I understand that some people have that pull, that sense of being the first to accomplish something or go somewhere. The first moon landing was spectacular and caught the world's attention because it was the first and something that people never thought mankind could do. Yes, we were in a race against Russia to be the first to get there. The moon especially has held a special attraction to humans even since ancient Greek times. People have see the moon and wondered what it was, why it was there in the sky, can we go there... In the movie, Jim Lovell made a valid point when a reporter asked him why NASA would continue sending people to the moon now that we've already been there. He said "Imagine what would have happened if Christopher Columbus sailed to the New World and nobody followed in his footsteps." Even today with the status of our Earth being in such peril that it is (granted, I agree with you that we should focus our attention to fixing the planet we're on...) it might be a valid contingency plan to look into colonization of another planet.
