In the last episode at the dinner table with Burt, Irving said the first severance office opened up 12 years ago. I’m assuming that’s when the first person was severed. So about your theory Christene, I believe everything we saw of Gemma on the testing floor was present day. I think they were just changing clothes and hairstyles to match whatever they were doing. If you noticed one of Gemma’s outfits in her closet had a wig with it. I believe they were just testing the severance barriers and seeing if she recognized him since they were seeing each other in different rooms all day basically. Also, if you look at 21:30, you can see Dr. Mauer at the doctors office in the flashback and he has grey hair there as well. Another thing, the Chikhai Bardo card is the same card that Dylan snuck out of O&D and Mr. Milchick had to wake him up inside of his house to find it. I’m not really sure how all of this ties together but I feel like Lumon was scouting her ever since she donated blood (we saw the Lumon logo there), then we saw Dr. Mauer at their appointment, and then she gets the card in the mail. It’s all a mystery from there

Imagine being the innie whose only purpose is to experience plane turbulence or the innie who has to get her teeth worked on, then that's it. Your outie only gets the aftereffects, but I would still feel scared not knowing what the main cause was :(
