This was going to be the final season now, and they only had until the end of it to wrap the show up. The Movie and Future got to happen because of the show's success despite the "risk" the show took with the wedding. the reason there was an ultimatum was because the show was international and got a lot of its funding from conservative countries. Those places could've ended the show any moment if they didn't like what the show was promoting according to Sugar: Cartoon Network needed the show to work internationally (most animated media for children is designed with an international audience in mind), so we were being held to the standards of the most conservative countries in the world. If they so much as read an interview with me online, the show could lose its international support, and we'd be finished. (In other countries they gave ruby a mustache because they didn’t want a lesbian relationship since all gems are female) Sugar spent a long time pushing for the wedding episode and other instances of queer representation on the show. She was in her late 20s when Cartoon Network gave her the green light — but not before explaining the stakes to her. “They brought me in for a meeting, and they essentially said, ‘We know that you’re doing this, and we know that if we were to tell you to stop, that would be based in bigotry.’” Sugar was then cautioned that the show could be censored internationally if she continued down the path she was on. “Ultimately they told me in this meeting that it would be my decision if I were going to tell the truth about what I was doing, which in hindsight was a really bold move for Cartoon Network to make, to actually give the decision to speak about this to the queer content creator generating this material.” “Steven Universe” ended up being pulled in multiple territories, but the show survived. Sorcher credits it with helping evolve Cartoon Network, where 52% of studio production staff is now female. “That’s the wake of ‘Steven Universe,’” says Sorcher, who notes also that the company’s artist population is now far younger than ever. Rebecca did fight but in the end she won the battle but lost the war. She put ruby in a wedding dress as a finial Fuck You basically bec other countries can’t censor that because everyone that saw the show in thoes country knows Ruby as a male and having a male in a wedding dress is frowned upon. Yes in the end we were given a movie and a short epilogue series but once you watch Steven Universe future you will see that the series was cut short. Right after change your mind aired they started working on the movie only having less then a month to work on. With Steven Universe about 70% of the story is actually told so much had to be cut out do to what happened to the point where there are books talking about what we where supposed to see and some redacted info unfortunately. But it did air in 2013-2019 so shows where at risk for having diversity which is fucking ridiculous. If Steven where to air now Rebeca would be able to show more but there are a lot of fans demanding more to the point where the demand is over 100% and there is hashtags on twitter demanding to bring it back on other streaming platforms. But yeah rebbeca put up a good fight but others had their own views Of course no studio would say we cancelled it because of queer representation but it was basically cancelled because of it. She could’ve not aired the wedding ep and let the show run longer but she didnt want to do that but thanks to her shows like the owl house could show queer representation so even tho Steven was cut short because of the wedding episode it helped pave the way for other shows

2025-01-02 21:00:15 +0000 UTCirrc Steven Universe was supposed to be 7 seasons but they got shortened to 5 seasons because of the wedding episode, however after the steven universe finale aired and they saw how well it was doing they decided to give it a movie and an epilogue series (Steven Universe Future)

2025-01-02 20:56:38 +0000 UTCFor more info, the wedding episode made CN rush the creators to end the show A LOT faster than the creators had planned, but the Steven Universe Movie was in production long before the wedding episode was released, so they were able to do what they wanted to do for that. Steven Universe Future though, got the brunt of the rush from the network, they only had 20 or so episodes to do the sequel series.
