It's been a while...

...but Velma "Velveteen" Martinez is back in action, hitting the city streets and planning to save the superheroic world through whatever means necessary.

Because of the long gap between installments, I'm re-posting "vs. Doctor Darwin" alongside the new "vs. Gainful Employment," to help get people vaguely back up to speed.  Welcome to volume four!

So glad for more Velveteen stories.

Was there anything on the LJ that didn’t make it into the books?

Wait, there's more Velveteen?!?! OH MY GOD YES! I can't describe how much I loved this series. I had to track down the old Livejournal to be able to read 'Velveteen vs. Recovery'! Oh I am so, so, so excited to see this! I adore reading more in Toby's verse and seeing Alice and Thomas finally get their act together, but god, it's been too long and I hope that Vel and Jackie and the others finally got to heal a bit.

That old chestnut about a tree falling in the forest has bothered me for Reasons ever since I was a snotty adolescent. I know that's entirely a *me* problem. It jars me out of a narrative for long enough to be irked, to remind myself that I have a weird reaction to the bit, and then to plunge back into the story. Except! Wow, Seanan, that was the most perfect use of this thing that I could ever imagine. Everything about it that ever made me grumble -- the dubious premise, the way imposed authority figures always sounded so superior and lecture-y when delivering that little bon mot, the whole "accept my tone without doing your own thinking" connotation, is so absolutely perfect for the sociologist-textbook context you use here. I did not have even one second of stopping to feel whatever I always feel, because it built on what I was already experiencing as the narrative builds: a suspicion that the sociologist-narrator voice is Up To Shenanigans, that they are trying to push the story in a way which not all of the participants are actually going. I love Velveteen's whole series, I love this October gift. Thank you so very much for writing this.
