Alice is not enjoying her time in the halls of higher education.

In the 1950’s women were still often still essentially considered property, especially by someone with the kind of isolated upbringing Clark described. “Keeping you woman in line,” and “do not make me look/feel foolish” we’re perfectly common reasons to smack a date/wife. Alice was supposed to be cowed, and apologetic, making him feel powerful again. Did not work out for him.
