This month we're stand-alone again (this year so far has been a gift to the folks who wanted more stand-alone stories, although I'm going to have to get back to following some continuity backstory stuff soon), as we examine another aspect of the current "AI" controversy.
Namely...what happens if these programs ever do become intelligent?

What worries me is that we're unlikely to be able to tell when we achieve sapient AI; modern chatbots can already convince some people they have a full inner life, since they're sufficiently adept at imitating how a human would insist on their own humanity, and presumably they're only going to get better at such imitation. By the time we get to actual sapience it's going to sound extremely similar to a state-of-the-art imitation.
