Patreon Vid: Busted up Buffalo TeraStation

Ordered a pristine (but probably inoperable) Buffalo TeraStation NAS on eBay and, well... you'll see what happened to it.

I got a newer Buffalo NAS (~2015) for free a while back. The software on it was of course utterly outdated and annoying to deal with. Found a project on github that let me install Debian 12 on it, used mdadm to set up RAID and now it's a decent little backup NAS. Slow and underpowered of course, but fine for what it is.

that's a good call... I'll experiment some more

I might end up 3d printing any pieces that are missing or too shattered

clabretro

ahh that's such a bummer

I wonder if the "connection" problem is related to a TLS certificate, possibly expired. Can you bring up the IP in a web browser? What does Wireshark show when accessing it?

Is it possible to 3d print a replacement cover?

I feel your pain. I picked up a beautiful Pentium Pro system from Digital Equipment Corp on eBay that arrived this week only for me to discover it's DOA. eBay is always a gamble. We mostly win, I guess. (That's why we keep going back.) But when we lose it sure stings.

Oh man, the newer version of these I have for our files at work is significantly less fun looking. Zero screws to get the drives out of mine though, so I guess what they didn't spend improving their website went to chassis improvements. Overall the pair I have have been chugging along happily for almost 6 years now with pretty much no effort on my end. Pretty solid product.

I'm in the zone lol
