Patreon Vid: Finally Stacking the Nortel BPS 2000s

The saga comes to an end, finally able to stack two Nortel BPS 2000s!

Happy holidays!

There's some blank video between 5:22 and 5:42, no missing footage just a gap in the timeline I missed while editing 🤦‍♂️

yeah I think I was spoiled by the catalyst switches I stacked. the dual cable redundancy makes sense but I was surprised it was required even for setup!

Ugh, I thought I posted this comment when you posted the video, but apparently forgot. It's common to need two or more cables to stack switches. HP Enterprise switches running Comware require this. It's intended for more than 2 switches so that if one switch in the stack goes down, the rest of the switches can layer2 route around the failure and the stack still remain functional. Not all vendors require multiple cables for it though. In the HPE stack I have there are 5 switches. Switch 1 is connected to 2 and 5. Switch 2 is connected to 1 and 3, switch 3 is connected to 2 and 4, and switch 4 is connected to 3 and 5. In my case that means I have 4 cables in each switch, 2 connecting to each neighbor, but that's for additional redundancy and bandwidth. It could be done with just one cable to each neighbor.

maybe it's transmitting *that* much data between the two switches that it actually requires two cables

TrolleyMC

Thanks! It's definitely heading in the right direction finally. Yeah odd that it required two

clabretro

Sorry to hear you've been sick, man. I hope you had a good holiday. I think it's interesting that it has two cables and you wire them up like a serial connection, with one transmitting the other receiving then vice versa.

Patience is a virtue when it comes to enterprise gear. Especially older enterprise gear. Cool to see it working!

Certainly. Big fan of your work, especially as someone who grew up in the DOS/Windows 9x days.

thanks!

clabretro

No worries. Great video though. :D

oops, that's what I get for rushing. that blank part should've just been cut entirely, I'll fix it!

FYi there's several seconds of footage dropped out between 5:22-5:42
