P2P Failures

Trying to get a local early 2000s P2P network going... without luck. Theoretically Limewire can behave in a serverless fashion (Napster's demise, more on that later), but no luck.

I've also tried running Openap, a reverse-engineered version of the Napster server from 2001, and Opennap NG, a fork of Opennap from ~2005. Napster required a centralized server to function, whereas Limewire and others were truly peer-to-peer via (I think?) Gnutella.

At any rate... I'm exploring the world of dial-up, and it's no fun to dial-up if you don't have something large to download and make the experience as excruciating as it was back then ๐Ÿ˜†

haha amazing. I started college in 2006 and DC++ was *HUGE* -- all of us were just downloading entire discographies and seasons of whatever we wanted in what felt like seconds.

It wasn't until a couple of weeks ago that I remembered that Napster had a chat client and was originally IRC based. I remember during my freshman year of college (2001) first semester Napster obliterated the entire college campus's bandwidth immediately after move in. It took Resnet admins a couple weeks to get things under control. I think each dorm room had one port of 10/100 internet with a splitter so the room could have two computers with each getting 2 twisted pairs of ethernet. As the semester went on, people moved to using SMB shares (very occasionally), but mostly DC (direct connect) and the client DC++.

Yeah firewall totally off - and I can access port 8875 and 8888 on the server from the other machine. So I still haven't figured it out ha.

Have you turned off the firewall on the XP machines? Those could be responsible for your misfortunes. That it works for localhost but not through the network is a clue pointing in that direction

Long live IRC! Hello from someone still actively using it :)

Holy macaroni, Limewire and napster - These things... maybe you should try ed2k or IRC :D

Boy do those take me back (to a time when I was a minor, and even if I wasnโ€™t the statute of limitations has surely elapsed). ๐Ÿ˜…

"it's no fun to dial-up if you don't [...] make the experience as excruciating as it was back then" Agree to disagree. :P
