This is FANTASTIC, thank you! Exactly what I needed to dive in. I have a couple more videos to tackle first but I'll definitely be getting a dial-up video eventually!

After writing to you, I felt like publishing a guide, so here it is: https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=100326 There is also a pdf. If you want to make a video of it, it sure comes out nice. You can connect using modems installed on various devices, I even connected with the CompactFlash modem installed in a compaq PDA with Windows CE! The handheld did not have Wi-Fi XD There are all the necessary parameters in the guide, setting cisco voip without any tips was not so easy

very cool! I'll definitely be diving into that eventually. I'll do some research on those model numbers you suggested.

If you are interested in trying those modems, I have made a 56K server that does not require a telephone line and can be started at low cost and in a short time. In the end all you need is a server that has to answer the call, I did it either with an old laptop with a Windows server 2000 to 2022 + integrated 56K modem or with a Cisco 1840 + 56K card. Someone also does it with a raspberry + serial USB cable and modem, but I haven't tried. You then need a device to simulate the telephone line, at a very low cost, I got a Linksys SPA2102 for €10. If you can't find the SPA2102 there are also alternatives always branded Cisco or Linksys such as Cisco SPA122, Linksys PAP2T At this point, you invent a telephone number of your choice and configure it on the SPA2102, invent a username and password and configure them on the server (Windows or Cisco). Take the device you want to connect to the internet, connect it to the SPA2102, start a 56K connection and you will find yourself in your LAN on a telephone call!

I think I've heard that working units are hard to come by, not just because they are extremely niche and low volume; but, they haven't aged well at all. That has scared me off of trying to find an UltraSPARC IIe SPARCLE. Tadpole also made an Alphabook with a DEC Alpha processor. I have no idea how well an older version of Linux or any version of OpenBSD or NetBSD would work on those.

Linh Pham

Yes, that'd be awesome haha

The best (or worst) of both worlds would be a Sun/Tadpole UltraSPARC laptop πŸ˜…

Me too lol. I've been having trouble hunting down more Sun gear, thinking I might do a re-hash of the v240 and get the rack kit on it though.

clabretro

Don't get me wrong, I love the pc card and networking stuff. But I'd love to see more Sun content, if possible.

Saturday just keeps getting better!
