Patreon Vid: Unboxing + Fixing that Intel 510T Module

A brief update video unboxing some of my latest pickups. We'll try to get that Intel 510T 100FX module fixed and go over a really quick basement reno update.

Let me know if you like these stream-of-consciousness videos, I'm just going to title them whatever date I upload them (this is not an April Fools joke). They're fun for me to make and actually kinda motivate me to get back working on the bigger videos.

See you at VCF East! Me and my friends will be exhibiting a bunch of old cable headend and networking equipment, won't be hard to pass us up; would love to meet ya!

iRaven

not a bad idea!

clabretro

next time!

Why do all the tech youtubers I enjoy have to be in one place the day I can't be in maryland! Curse my college-bound luck!

Dan

I'm thinking that if you need lots of those interposers you might be able to get a couple PCBs fabbed up, should be relatively cheap if you can still source the connectors.

Sven

Yeah I'm excited about it! It all won't be operating faster than 2G for a looooong time but I'm happy to have options now haha

clabretro

Ha I didn't even look at the actual SFPs, but those things won't be operating at higher than 2G for the foreseeable future haha. Thanks for the extra info, and thanks for sending in all the gear!

WOW, jackpot on that FC gear. We had some old Cisco MDS stuff that was built like a tank but I think we got rid of it. We had 2x 4U units but I can't seem to find them on google. Wish we'd kept those around :P I actually still have a couple 9124e (Cisco FC module in an HP Blade Chassis) that are still in use for a system we're still trying to get the last few things off of. Then the entire blade chassis will finally be able to be yanked!

Glad you enjoyed the kit! Hopefully those top 2 HBAs in the anti-static bag didn't get damaged in transit, probably not the wisest way to pack them in hindsight. Those SFPs are "just" 8G FC SFPs unfortunately, the 10G SFP casing just happened to be the only one lying around. They were originally in the FC switches themselves, but I took them out for shipping. The 4x8G HBAs were actually in use in a couple of my lab netapps, but will be perfectly happy in a standard server as well. You may want to look at "target/targetcli" on a linux host, as that'll allow you to switch them from "initiator" to "target" mode, and present storage onto the fabric (If you find that the DAS isn't enough) Glad to see the 510T working as well! It looked like the front of the module was still poking out a bit in the last video, so I was curious if it was fully seating or not.

I'll try to keep an eye out for that (I'll admit I don't watch or edit the videos with headphones, so that could very well be the problem and I don't catch issues)

clabretro

It seems completely random to be honest. Only in a handful of videos of late—I won’t even notice it’s been in mono for a bit until suddenly the right channel kicks in. Multiple devices on my end as well, unless it’s my ears. 😅

Liquorist

Thank you!

clabretro

Yeaaaah I don't think I solved it in this one, but I think I can dial that new one in. Do you notice that when I'm doing the screen recordings? I use different microphones for screen recording vs. the rest of the footage.

clabretro

I’ve noticed audio cutting back and forth between channels a bit over the past video or two, so here’s hoping that new mic alleviates that!

Liquorist

Loving the steady flow of content. Keep up the good work!!
