Early Vid: Stackable '90s Intel Networking Gear

Taking a look at a hub and switch in the Intel Express 500 and 200 series line of gear from the late 1990s.

I'm ahead of myself for once here, so this one will probably go live end of the week!

Looking at the FTP server that timed out for you, it is working and I managed to get the file off it, but it downloaded at 9 kilobits per second.

Sven

yes!

clabretro

The next thing would be to find some (or make) rack rails :)

Matthew Gregory

Haha I got a notification a few moments ago. πŸ˜‚

Liquorist

I got impatient and set it live πŸ˜‚

clabretro

I've seen several retro youtubers do it with esd brushes, seems like they aren't that expensive

Sgt. Silver

I've also never bothered with it (in a private context), but good to keep in mind if anything inexplicably fails after cleaning

Tobias Christiansen

yeah decided it was worth the risk haha

clabretro

Be careful when using a brush and an air compressor to dust the dust away, you can easily run into trouble with electrostatic discharge and destroy some components.

Tobias Christiansen

Good point. I didn't actually know that when I first set the bridge up, so I used to be messing with the IP all the time. Now it's just set to whatever the last network was when I thought I had to do that haha.

clabretro

Just a quick tip, as long as lroxmox doesn't need to be accessed on that bridge, it doesn't need an IP address. You can leave it blank.

Jordan Armstrong

haha don't worry, it will be very rare that they're out this early

clabretro

I’m going to need to get used to this early access thing; I can already tell that Saturday morning me is going to feel deprived of watching this! πŸ˜…

Liquorist

oh yeah. Procurve is on the list.

clabretro

Very cool. Now compare them with an HP Procurve. They were my favorite around 2007ish.

Matt Standish

thanks! yeah I need to get a 3com vid going soon!

clabretro

Found one for 35$ with a 100FX module - Maybe that's cheap enough for ya for justifying to buy it just for the module. https://adhesivenetworks.com/product/intel-express-510t-switch-24-port-managed-es510t-with-2-port-100fx-module/ And while you're at it to poke at old networking gear equipment from yesteryear - 3COM wants to know your location. :D I wonder if these things still exist and would potentially work: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Search_Appliance

Sgt. Silver

thanks! I'll attempt to weave more of that in, I really enjoy that stuff as well

clabretro

I'm glad you left it in, as it'll be something people who want to get into the older networking gear will run into.

I like your idea of injecting some history behind the hardware and software. What was the reason for the design? What was the market? Why was it successful, or not? How was it ultimately used? I think the background of the machine is just as interesting as watching these old computers come back to life!

John Fugedy

total face palm moment after I realized it finally. thought about cutting that out but figured I'd show everyone the pain haha

clabretro

I guess I'm showing my age that when you were about to connect the two switches together, I was already internally screaming "crossover cable!". Auto MDIX wasn't common back then and I always had a bunch of crossover cables (different color than normal cables, if I had the choice) to differentiate them.
