Video should go live on the channel this weekend.

sorta... the ps2 SIPs were $6 usd each shipped on ebay, but the usb SIP was $15. you can save money buying them in lots, and really the ps2s are good enough for my use cases because I can just use ps2 to USB converters on newer machines.

I need make one cable for the sun T2000. it does not have a graphics card.

Renato Frederick

the SIP is expensive now? I remember that they are expensive when new

Renato Frederick

agreed! there is pikvm and others that look really nice, but the costs can add up there too. I figured it'd be more fun to breath old life into this poweredge.

clabretro

this poweredge had sun SIPs according to the manual and OSCAR interface, but I couldn't find any. I just use serial connections for Sun management through an MRV console server on the rack which works really nice, it exposes the serial ports over telnet.

clabretro

There are converters to use usb keyboards on things like the old sun - that uses a weird connector/protocol - using raspberry and nothing to do an IP KVM? What is the difficulty?

Renato Frederick

I want to know why, even 2023 IP KVM are so expensive.. and why theres no open source projects to support this. Something using a raspberry.

Renato Frederick

I'll still throw that in the rack in addition to this. kinda been thinking about how to use it in the workshop area somehow 😂

clabretro

Man this is so cool. Are you gonna scrap that IBM console for this KVM now?

skver

I was wondering that too but didn't have time to monitor the traffic, I'll have to do that eventually.

clabretro

Nice video, released just as I was about to start dinner so it took me a while to watch, but it was great after-dinner entertainment. I wonder what the signals over the rj45 cable look like?

Sven

Yeah it was quite the surprise to see that power supply ha.

clabretro

Great video! Crazy that the Dell and Extron share the same power supply! I did the same noctua fan mod on my 3d printer when I got it years and years ago. And yup you are correct the name is stored in the SIPs.
