Haven’t seen it. I heard the director killed someone though.

Trevor Poe

It's not as good as American Werewolf. He didn't get the comedy / horror mix as well with Innocent. He lost it after Coming to America.

I still can't believe Landis has a movie called Innocent Blood and it's forgotten, like the hack jokes write itself

Why does a John Landis vampire movie feel so restraint?

When I was maybe 13 or so years old, Anne Parillaud's character in La Femme Nikita seemed like the greatest thing I'd ever seen. It's still probably my all-time favorite movie, or at least the movie I've watched by far the most times in my life for whatever inexplicable reason. When I first sought Innocent Blood out, I wanted to like it so much, but it just came off as a lame copy inspired by the romantic plots, the over-the-top performances and melodrama, and the kinda wet-neon cityscape of Nikita. But then Landis adds in this stable of really recognizable character actors going in all directions with hyperkinetic energy and some ultra-cheesy, trite crap about gothic universal horror dracula for the 90s... Not to mention like black comedy elements? It's no wonder the performances are like everyone is out on their own island just doing their own thing, and they all come off as stilted and alien.

Saw it with some friends in the theatre on my 14th birthday. The theatre was empty except for the 6 of us, and a couple sitting towards the front. During the sex scene, when her eyes start changing colors, one of my friends yells 'I want contacts like those!' That was probably the best possible way to watch that movie, a bunch of young teens in the 90s being silly on a school night.

Innocent Blood feels like a missed opportunity in its concept of mafia vampires, with the idea only introduced in the third act and the problem easily dealt with in the climax. Whilst it does boast some impressive special effects (Albeit with wonky contact lenses), succeeding in its horror, and having Loggia chewing scenery, what holds it back for me is its pacing, characterisation, and not knowing how to balance its two tones (Though it does it better than Vampire in Brooklyn). Then there's Anne Parillaud as Marie; our leading vampire. In addition to her performance being outright bad (I guess this was her first English language film and she had yet to grasp the nuances of the line delivery), the narration they give her doesn't add much other than exposition, coming and going whenever they need it (With that sex scene not adding much to the film other than titillation). For me, Landis succeeded before in American Werewolf in London, knowing how to balance the horror and comedy to make something that'll scare you and make you giggle at the depravity. Innocent Blood does retain his signature style, but it feels overbearing with its winking to the audience that it knows it's a Vampire homage (Like the cameos from Horror alumni and clips from classic horror films).

Was hoping to really enjoy it and it ended up being a mess for me. The leads were not interesting to me and their sex scene feels like it came straight out of the room. The highlight is Robert Loggia hamming it up.

I've never seen it and it isn't streaming for "free" anywhere. Even The Stupids is on Tubi!
