2023-10-22 22:25:05 +0000 UTCAbout 10% of kids at my school had a cell phone by 1996 and it was probably 40% by 1997. Most young adults had one by 1999 but it only blew up when texting became a big thing which was a couple of years after phones became small and affordable. A lot of people didn’t see the point until then, as the number of times they needed to phone someone or be phoned, except in work, was rare and in the evenings people were at home and could use that phone. Some of the major phone network CEOs didn’t believe texts would be popular so they were really expensive and short. Until the 00s you usually paid outright for your mobile and in the 90s most people started on pay as you go. It was only when EDGE (before 3G) launched and phones became more advanced and expensive that they started blending the cost into the 12 month contracts. From about 2000 the popularity spread outwards from young adults as teens couldn’t buy their own so had to persuade parents and older adults couldn’t programme a VCR to record something that evening so they were slow to embrace mobiles. I don’t really think of it in terms of before mobiles and with mobiles; more like “when you had to be on time” vs “now”.
