Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Comments

I always wonder with these lengthy franchises at what point does someone say "Do we really have to keep numbering these?"

Vincent Hollow

Will be interested to hear what scene that is when that reaction goes up. As for Hendricks, if you've never seen the deleted scene I mentioned in my comment, check it out. Nyqvist is really good in it.

I really love Ghost Protocol, though I agree with you that it's perplexing how little the main villain is fleshed out. Lea Seydoux's assassin character, while also having very scant dialogue, is far more memorable--to the degree that I wonder if somehow the script should've been tweaked to make her the main villain. That said, like you, I love the team dynamic. It weirdly reminds me of a good MCU movie in that regard. Even though I enjoyed the hectic tone of JJ Abrams' work in MI3, I also really liked how carefully storyboarded Ghost Protocol felt. That, plus the lighthearted humor, and the Rube Goldberg like climax in the car garage felt like Brad Bird's animation roots coming through. This is also around the time when Cruise starts playing Ethan as "put upon," approaching everything with a subtle exasperation and fallibility. I find this very winning. It works so well to have that contrast between his hesitancy to climb the Burj Khalifa and Benji having to talk him into it. (Further proof that when they made MI 2, they just didn't "get it." From a storytelling perspective, it feels meaningless for Ethan to climb that mountain in the opening, essentially risking his life without any reason to, and expressing no relatable fear.) I've worked out a mathematical equation: Ethan in MI3 and Ghost Protocol = John McClane/good. Ethan in MI2 = Steven Seagal/bad. Fun music touch: I really like how at the very end of Ghost Protocol when we see Julia again, Giacchino incorporates the "Julia" theme into the score that he'd written for MI3. I like it when composers do that "John Williams" thing where they assign specific themes to characters. *** Heads up for "Rogue Nation": There is a scene in it that I find cinematically brilliant. Oddly, it's one that people never list when asked to name their favorite Mission Impossible scenes, so I guess the brilliance in this specific scene must be kind of subtle.
