50 First Dates (2004) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Sean Astin was the standout in this one for me. This was right after all of the LOTR movies had come out and seeing him in this absurd comedic role was hilarious! As for Rob Schneider, I remember really thinking he was funny at one time. But I think I've grown out of his humor as I've gotten older. Not saying he was awful. I still chuckled a few times. Adam Sandler likes to have a lot of the same people in his films. 10-Second-Tom was his best friend (limo driver) in The Wedding Singer. Alexa played George (Do You Really Want To Hurt Me) in TWS too. The guy who played Lucy's dad has been in some of his other movies. For me I loved the 80s nostalgia of The Wedding Singer. But for pure comedy and heart, I like this one slightly better. Also loved the animal interaction and humor. Plus the backdrop of Hawaii was beautiful. Can't go wrong with Sandler and Barrymore though. They had amazing chemistry and comedic timing together.

Although I can't believe this and The Wedding Singer beat Punch Drunk Love in the poll—which is, by every metric, the far superior film—I still really enjoyed watching them again.

I saw this in theaters when I came out. I have never had the urge to rewatch it. If it wasn’t free on Prime for me not sure I would have, even to enjoy the reaction and commentary. Sorry to say I still find the movie mediocre. I could say it’s because the story is almost schizophrenic, bouncing between touching and gross-out style humor, but that’s just an excuse. It just falls flat for me. I find the end unsatisfying and will probably never watch this again. One moment that stood out to me personally was Alexa’s comment she likes the sausage, not the taco. Reminds me of a woman I was dating several years back. She texted me one evening and I just gotten take out for dinner; tacos. I told her what I was eating and she tried to make it dirty, but I had no idea what was happening. It’s not a slang term I use. At the time, I was just confused and uncomfortable. Today that memory popped up as something I could laugh at. So I got that out of the rewatch at least.

Great reaction, KL! Man, this movie hits different when you're older. 😆

I agree, as a whole I prefer The Wedding Singer. But for the romantic element, 50 First Dates is quite lovely and just pips ahead. The idea that Henry is more than a bit of a commitment phobe until he meets Lucy. But once he does, he's all in. In ways that are more than a big ask in most cases. When it's the one, ya know, nothing is too much trouble for the love of your life. Although a difficult reality to believe is possible to sustain long term. It's a splendid romantic ideal, that we get to enjoy for fun and smiles. (And maybe a tear or two for us sappy suckers.) 😆 The idea that Lucy gets to wake up and meet a person so committed to her. He choose this life. At a moment of her most vulnerable, she knows she is loved. So this romantic idea wins out for me. I love these two together. I'll have to give their third film Blended a rewatch soon now.

Just an easter egg, there was a point where they mention the brain institute is funded by Callahan auto in Sandusky, Ohio. That is a reference to a Chris Farley movie called Tommy Boy. An absolute 90s classic comedy. Farley and Sandler were good friends when they were on SNL together along with David Spade. I definitely recommend you watching that movie.

Mario Serra

I remember liking this movie, but being sad at the end.
