I def want to check out some other things he's been in eventually!

It's so great to experience! Such a shame this show didn't get the continuation that it seems to deserve.

I think Mal is my favourite too. Jayne is great though too.

Ever since the movie My Bodyguard, I've enjoyed watching Adam Baldwin act. He's got an edge to him, but in Firefly, Jane's kind of a comedic sidekick. I know, his mouth can run him into trouble, but this episode highlights his comedic talents! And Jewel Staite's "As I move around it seems like his eyes are following me. So GOOD!

Also with your comments about liking the character of Jayne, it's one of the things I loved about this show. There's depth to all the characters. Sure, at the start, Jayne was just this "brutish thug", but this episode shows there's clearly more there than that. Joss Whedon shows have always had the trait of taking time to get going. He doesn't rush to show you everything about a character, but instead takes time to develop them. It leads to a slow start to a show, but gives so much more overall.

Inara's reaction when Jayne was called a hero was priceless. The stammer especially so 🀣

I love that Jayne experiences something true and right and real, feels it deep down, but just can't get his head or heart around it. It's hard to pick out a favorite character in this show for me--Mal, probably--but Jayne is up there, if only because he just doesn't fit into mold, no matter how hard anyone tries to.

Simon is hilariously awkward and I'm always here for it. That line from River is great and that's a great explanation of it!

The key thread in this episode is symbols and what they mean to different people - almost every major conversation is ultimately focused on a symbol of some sort: Jayne, the Bible, Fess 'becoming a man', etc. There's a comment that someone I know posted on another Discord about River, Book and the Bible which I'm going to blatantly steal and repost here as I can't think of a better way to put it: "I love the line 'I tore these out of your symbol and they turned into paper.' The pages always were paper, obviously, but as part of the Bible they're something more for religious people. They are a symbol - of faith, of something to believe in, to strive towards. And when ripped out, when taken out of context, they become something else. Lesser." Poor Simon, he's constantly saying just enough of the wrong thing for Kaylee to take offence πŸ˜…. What he meant was that he'd never take advantage of Kaylee when drunk, but because of how he worded it...
