Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Maveth [3x10] ✦ Watchalong Reaction & Review

AHHH, what a wild episode! And I may have laughed the hardest I've ever laughed at an AOS episode in this one? πŸ˜… [Direct link here.]

So many things to talk about! I look forward to your comments.

Have a great weekend!

Ward 1.0 is the shield agent Ward. Ward 2.0 is Traitor Ward. Ward 3.0 is Hydra Leader Ward So this is Ward 4.0 lol

After reading some comments then thinking back, I thought about one thing. Jemma releasing Lash to save her, then she realized later how many he killed I think she had deep regrets about it at least it seemed like it to me. So now we are on Ward version what 3.0 ? or It 1.0 lol

Given what we were shown, I assume that the look Fitz and Coulson gave each other had everything to do with what Coulson did on the planet to Ward and Fitz watching it. We didn't see the reveal of "Ward" being back until after that moment, so that look between them wouldn't make sense to be about It making it back to Earth. I think if they saw a dead man get up and go through the portal, they'd be MUCH more urgent in their demeanor to destroy It. I KNEW you'd get a kick out of the Tatooine line. 😁 I thought of the Fitz/Jemma reunion as less sweet because it was more about her seeing that Will didn't make it back and not about Fitz making it back, although I know she was grateful for that, her reaction was more realization that Will didn't make it, so it was more heartbreaking for her and Fitz comforting her 'cause he did promise her multiple times that he'd bring Will back.

Damn, really cool! Thanks for all the info.

Never gets old!

It was satisyfing that it was Coulson who did it, at least for me. But definitely a shock factor, for sure! Yeah, Ward has had a bit of a crazy path. It will be so fun to rewatch one day knowing the full story.

I like that breakdown of the different Coulson's. To me, this season has been where he's at his most different compared to the first two seasons.

THREE MONTHS. Gosh. That's so painful. Listen... Yeah, Elizabeth is fantastic. It's been cool seeing her and Iain's acting get so much better over time through this show. Can't wait to see how great they continue to be by the end! Honestly, it feels the same for me too. In many ways I feel like I just started the season AND we had the holidays too!

The orchestra Bear McCreary used every week was actually typically 50-75 pieces, occasionally (as for this episode) going up to 90 (!) pieces (you might be thinking of the orchestra he used for BSG, which was around 20 pieces). There's more info on Bear McCreary's website (https://bearmccreary.com/project/marvel-agents-of-s-h-i-e-l-d/) - @kaiielle with the exception of the final post (covering the entire show), everything there is safe to read/watch (maybe you could react to some of those videos with the bloopers? πŸ™‚)

I heartily agree about Elizabeth's performance during that end scene, gets me every time!

Loved you reaction and you're right, for a very dramatic episode there is a lot of humour! Just to echo Sean's comment from the previous episode, Bear McCreary's score is superb. He composed and produced the music for every (iirc) episode with the help of a 20+ piece orchestra. This episode contains one of my favourites scores called 'Crossing into Darkness' which starts when Coulson kills Ward and gets more intense as the team reunites. And then all the intensity is lost as the camera pans to Simmons as she realises that Will hasn't returned! Great stuff!

Dyrla

It may get old commenting "another great episode!" on every AOS reaction, but what can I say, the show is consistently outperforming is previous heights in my opinion! I am always invested!

This was a great midseason finale and many people were shocked that Coulson killed Ward especially in such a brutal painful way. Having your chest caved in by a robotic arm while lying on an alien planet is not easy to guess so many were surprised like you. If you look at Garrett and his influence on Ward you can see how he was made into a tool for Hydra and Ward never really had an identity beyond that. He tried hard to save Garrett life because he was the only one that really believed in him and when he died Ward was lost so he tried to get Daisy to believe in him. ( Which is why he never lied to her in s2) When he lost kara (the only other person that believes in him) he rejoined Hydra for revenge because that gave him some kind of purpose but once he saw that Statue of Hydra he formed a believe in something bigger because what he was doing actually mattered to someone. Ironically he sort of went crazy near the end like Garrett did and was killed by Coulson. But at least he finally believed in something other then his own goals and is now fully a servant of Hydra. Literally the embodiment of their god... Fun fact this episode was the First time Ward said Hail Hydra in the series I think. The actor that played will had some issues that could not be resolved so he actually was written out. He actually was supposed to play the character for longer that Brett Dalton is playing now I believe

Mid-season finale time! Quite a few things happened this episode that look like they will have an impact on the characters themselves going forward - Jemma was clearly conflicted about letting Andrew out, Fitz has to deal with 'killing' Will (even though it wasn't actually Will), and of course Coulson has killed Ward out of revenge. About Coulson killing Ward - I don't recall who made this remark (think it was either Clark or one of the showrunners), but they said that S1 Coulson would have brought Ward back to face justice, S2 Coulson would have just left him there, but only S3 Coulson would have killed him. IIRC, the original plan was that this would be the end of Brett - "it" would return to Earth in Will instead. However, due to some personal issues with Will's actor, that plan (and presumably quite a bit of the storyline for the rest of the season) was changed so that Brett would become "it" instead.

Sean Ellingham

Oh, I forgot about that! To be honest, I think I fell off Agent Carter and didn't pick it back up until a couple of years later.

TBF, we *did* get Agent Carter S2 during the break

Sean Ellingham

Here. We. Motherfucking Go!

Huge happenings! This was the mid-season finale. We had to wait 3 WHOLE MONTHS before continuing. 😲 His chest caves in and your reaction is "Huh... ... Well, Ward isn't dead." 🀣🀣🀣 I know what you meant, but that was a hilarious level of denial there for a sec. πŸ˜‚ RE: Final slow motion shot; You mentioned you wanted Bobbi to hug Hunter, but in my head they were both just busy happily hugging their BFF Mack. I think the way Elizabeth Henstridge played Jemma's reaction there at the end was perfect. Going from expecting/hoping to see Will, to sad realizing he wasn't there, to guilty looking at Fitz for how she felt, to just happy looking at Fitz knowing he made it back safely, at least. That's a lot to ask to perform in a non-verbal slow-motion shot. I'd be curious to know how many takes they did of that. Two episodes a week simultaneously feels like you're moving through the show very fast, yet at the same time not fast enough! πŸ˜… (That's not a complaint, I'm very happy.)
