Uncut Gems (2019) ✦ Full-Length Watchalong Reaction

Hello everyone! This was a Reactr request, and SURPRISE I hadn't heard of this one. (Not a surprise.) I always get excited to see an Adam Sandler performance that I haven't yet. I'm looking forward to your thoughts on this one. Cheers! [Direct link here.]

Excellent reaction! I, personally, do really, really, like this film, and it's interesting to me that the reasons you didn't entirely enjoy it are precisely some of the same reasons that I did. The relentlessness of this movie, for me, is just brilliant—the sensory overload, the talking over each other, the pace, the insane choices, the fact that I shouldn't like this character but I feel sorry for him at the same time... The only other film that I can think of that is this jarringly intense is The Texas Chainsaw Massacre—and even that starts off relatively chill. So, I don't think you not being enthusiastic about it is a bad thing, because you were spot on about the film—it would have been an different story had you said "oh, I didn't like it because it was dull and boring". ps. I have some catching up to do because I have been in Poland for a few months but am now in London for a while, and have noticed that you are starting She-Hulk... which I enjoyed a lot, and am looking forward to watching along.

My sisters invited me last minute to go see this movie in theaters and all I can say is it had my anxiety and blood pressure through the ROOF!! lol

David Martin

I also think that's the point. Definitely not a likable character!

Def let us know your thoughts when you do!

Appreciate you requesting this one, thanks again. It is extremely chaotic haha. And yeah, I would not have disabled subtitles. 😉 I'm always happy to experience movies for myself. And that fun fact is hilarious.

Thanks for the casting notes! Appreciate it.

I would definitely hesitate before jumping into the films of director Robert Altman, who, among many things, was famous for pioneering the style of characters talking over each other/simultaneously. I've only seen some of his films, so that's not necessarily how all of his films are, nor are they quite as constant with it as this one, but that was a major part of his filmmaking. When I heard the note at the beginning of the movie and could tell you were taking it at face value, I thought, "hmmm...is it a good idea to use sarcasm in a note like that?" A couple of cast notes: The actor playing Demany, Howard's connection to Kevin Garnett, is LaKeith Stanfield, who you know from Knives Out, where he plays the lead detective. Kevin Garnett, like The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye), is playing himself, as is John Amos, Howard's famous apartment neighbor who doesn't let his kid use the bathroom. Also, some of the fringe characters, like the other jeweler Flawless and the crazy helicopter guy who helps Julia at the casino (Wayne Diamond) are technically playing themselves, in order to give the movie some more authentic NYC flavor. The voice on the phone of the woman who works at the auction house is a brief vocal cameo from Tilda Swinton, and one of the Knicks people you hear on the phone is Natasha Lyonne. I wouldn't say I love this movie, but I respect it, and I agree that Sandler is great in it.

I hecking LOVE this film. It's so chaotic and that's so much a part of the experience. I almost suggested you watch this without subtitles because they'd never be able to actually keep up, but I knew that wasn't gonna fly. 🤷 There's an *energy* that comes from watching this guy constantly trying (unsuccessfully) to hustle everyone he can at every possible opportunity, and every time comes out losing, you feel *a little* bad for him but you're also screaming "of COURSE that was gonna happen, you idiot!" at the screen. The movie's definitely not for everyone, as you quickly found out, but I'm glad you got a chance to see if nonetheless. Fun Fact: when the directing duo won an award for their work on this, they both walked up to the stage, each pulled out their own acceptance speech, and then proceeded to read them simultaneously into the one mic. Ya gotta love these guys.

I haven't seen this, might check it out. Specifically as I'm wondering how it might compare to Reign Over Me, which is my fav performance of his. Mostly in the terms of branching out in directions that are different to what he is typically known for.

Easily one of Adam Sandler's best performances...also, I hate him in this. I think that's the point, though, so cheers!
