Chapter 10: The Boy Who Watched
Added 2025-10-11 18:55:16 +0000 UTCArthur remembered hearing several references to cultivation realms.
Qi Condensation was the first big step. Following that was Foundation Establishment, the second major realm. After that, Arthur had not heard anything specific, but the format suggested a tiered progression system. So, Arthur assumed there were probably several layers or levels to every major realm.
That fit with the boy’s internal energy signature. Arthur had determined the structural development in Tao's energy pathways. The energy flowed smoothly through developed pathways, refined and under control. That suggested systematic advancements from one level to the next in this cultivation system. Systematic advancements rather than continuous progress as in the Resonance practitioners' practice.
Different systems had different optimizations for different things.
Resonance work was best suited for versatility and theoretical understanding. This cultivation system seemed to favour systematic accumulation of power and internal refinement.
Tao set the empty tray aside but didn't get up immediately. Instead, he sat on the floor, staring at Arthur with that curious stare of his.
Arthur could see the boy's thought process. Tao was interested. Wanted to ask questions. While the language barrier would prevent him from communicating directly, it would not prevent the boy from attempting to soak up as much information as possible from Arthur.
The sight reminded Arthur of his young self and he almost smiled. Almost.
Instead, he ate the last of his meal at a steady pace, then stood and went to his pack. He took out his journal and one of his writing tools. The journal was a bound leather book, filled with pages of his written research observations, experimental results, and theoretical calculations. Two years of research and experimentation documenting his failed Septuple Weave technique.
Arthur sat back down and opened his journal to a blank sheet. He began to draw the seven-pointed pattern he had used for his Resonance Anchors. He did so, not because he needed to document it; he had it perfectly memorized. But drawing allowed him to think while focusing on something, and perhaps it would also give him insight into Tao's reactions.
The boy immediately leaned forward, focused on the geometric pattern: the seven points, the connections, the proportions. He was analyzing it trying to understand the significance.
Arthur labeled the points. Not in his native tongue, but in the universal notation used by the Symphonic Spire. Ember. Torrent. Bedrock. Zephyr. Vitae. Void. Prismatic. The seven primary Harmonics, in their traditional configuration.
Tao pointed to one of the labels and made a questioning sound.
Arthur touched the Ember label and demonstrated surface synchronization with the ember harmonic, only generating a small amount of flame to show the relationship between the label and the concept it represented.
The boy's eyes opened slightly wider. He looked from the flame to the label and then to Arthur's face. In that old, tired, gaze comprehension dawned. The labels represented different kinds of energy. Different forms of techniques, elements, or whatever this world referred to them as.
Tao pointed to another label - torrent.
Arthur extinguished the flame and formed a sphere of water that hovered above his palm by pulling moisture from the air. Standard synchronization this time, slightly more dissonance than the flame demonstration, but within the acceptable range. His current dissonance levels are approximately 240 points, dropping towards 230. More than enough room to demonstrate basic techniques.
The sphere of water spun slowly and caught the light from the nearby lamp. Tao stared at it with apparent fascination. The boy then looked at his hands, then back at Arthur. A question in his body language.
He asked if he could try. If Arthur could teach him to do what Arthur just did.
That was a complex question with no easy answers. The boy's cultivation system was fundamentally different from Resonance Theory. Arthur was unsure if someone trained in this world's methods could possibly learn to synchronize with the Harmonics. The internal/external energy approach may be mutually exclusive at a base level.
However, Arthur didn't know that for sure. He would need to study the boy's cultivation system more thoroughly in order to make any definitive conclusions. And he would need to actually communicate with the boy, which would mean revealing to the boy that he understood the local language.
Not yet, though. Not until he has studied more. Not until he has positioned himself appropriately and understood the local politics.
Arthur dismissed the sphere of water and shook his head slightly. A clear negative. Not a complete denial, but an indicator that this was not the time to teach.
Tao's expression didn't change, but Arthur saw disappointment in the slouch of the boy's shoulders. The boy nodded once, accepting the answer without complaint. Then he picked up his empty tray, bowed in appreciation, and exited the room.
Arthur watched him leave. The door closed softly, and he was alone once again.
Dissonance: approximately 235 points.
Safe limits. He could now perform any technique he wanted without risking additional Cadence damage.
Arthur picked up his journal and began writing. However, this time he was writing about this new world. All of the things he had seen and heard since arriving. The Spirit Beasts and their Dissonance enhanced weaponry. The boy's cultivation system and internal energy pathways. The social structure indicated by the conversations he overheard. The local economy and currency. The local defenses. The cultivation realm terms.
He filled three pages with dense notes before his hand cramped and forced him to stop.
Outside his window, he noticed that darkness had fully fallen. There were few pedestrians walking along the illuminated streets. The common area was still active; Arthur could hear the hushed tones of conversation and occasional laughter coming up through the floorboards.
He stood and stretched, releasing tension in his lower back and upper shoulders. His body was sore from the battle and the previous day’s stress, but he was healing. Humans were surprisingly resilient as long as they received adequate rest and nutrition.
Arthur walked to the window and gazed out into the unfamiliar town. There was a world out there in the darkness that Arthur didn't understand, filled with people and their systems and politics that Arthur had no knowledge of. He was alone, displaced, with no known path back home, nor was there a guarantee of one.
A portion of his mind felt terrified by that fact.
The other portion that had deliberately defied the Resonance Council's explicit prohibition found it fascinating.
He had discovered a completely new magical system. A reality in which the fundamental laws of Harmonic interaction were different. One in which internal cultivation replaced external synchronization. One in which cultivators could weaponize what Arthur's world considered accumulated damage. The potential for theoretical advances was enormous.
If he could properly investigate this new system, compare it to Resonance Theory, identify the fundamental principles that governed both systems... He may discover new insights that would revolutionize magical understanding in both worlds. If he ever returned.
And if he didn’t get back home, well.
At least he would have died seeing something that no one from his world had ever seen.
That was worth something.
Arthur closed the shutters and barricaded them, then went to the bed. He should sleep. His body needed rest. His Cadence needed time to recover. Tomorrow would present new challenges, new discoveries, and new data to gather.
However, sleep did not arrive right away when he lay down. His mind was racing, reviewing everything he had learned. He was planning his next moves. Thinking about options. Constantly thinking, constantly analyzing, and constantly seeking to gain a better understanding.
Eventually, exhaustion claimed him. Arthur's consciousness slipped into something similar to sleep. But when his Cadence detected a presence outside, Arthur's eyes snapped open.
The room was dark. The lamp had burned out sometime during the night. The moonlight filtering through the cracks in the wood shutters provided enough light to recognize basic objects.
His Cadence was screaming warning signals.
Arthur slowly sat up, quietly, and expanded his Attunement to get a better feel of the presence. It was outside his door, standing in the hallway. He could clearly sense the energy signature of a human. However, the strength of the power signature was... considerable.
This individual was extremely powerful. Much more powerful than the massive Foundation Establishment beast that Arthur had killed on the road. The internal energy signature was refined, compressed, and controlled to an extent that made the boy's cultivation appear rudimentary compared to this individual.
This was someone who had progressed significantly in this world's magical system.
And more worryingly, this individual was using some sort of concealment technique.
Arthur could feel it now that he was actively looking. The person's energy signature was being dampened, suppressed, hidden behind what Arthur's Cadence interpreted as a form of active camouflage.
The technique was highly sophisticated.
It would probably be completely undetectable to anyone using normal methods of detection. The individual was manipulating the ambient energy surrounding their physical body to create a blind spot in the standard cultivation senses this world's practitioners relied on.
But Arthur wasn't using standard cultivation senses.
He was using Attunement, perceiving the underlying Harmonic frequencies that comprised reality itself. And those frequencies were being disrupted by the presence of a physical body regardless of how carefully that person tried to hide.
The concealment technique worked perfectly against internal energy detection, but it did nothing to mask the way the figure's physical form interacted with ambient Harmonics.
Different detection method. Different weaknesses.
The presence continued to remain stationary outside Arthur's door. They were neither approaching the door nor leaving. They were simply standing there, staring, waiting, or listening.
Arthur's pulse quickened despite his efforts to remain calm.
This was a threat.
An unknown threat with unknown abilities and unknown motivations.
The individual may even be powerful enough to kill Arthur if they decided to resort to violence.
Arthur's compromised Cadence and limited threshold meant that he could not fight at full capacity.
The question was: did they realize that Arthur could detect them?
But more importantly: What did they want?
