Chapter 2: The Attack

A few days later, after Cindy, Polly and Gemma had taught Ruby a lesson, Cindy awoke in her favorite bedroom of her luxurious appartment. Surrounded by many other girls in her gang sleeping here and there, she rubbed the sleep from her eyes and the pain from her temple.

What kind of wild party had they had there last night?

She rose with a groan, and as she walked toward the minibar, she stepped on the fingers and toes of some of her followers who dared to lie in her way. It surprised Cindy a little to find the remains of a bottle of whiskey still in the minibar. She poured herself a cupful, sipped it, and rinsed her mouth with the booze as she looked out at the city through a huge glass wall. It was her city now! She had made it.

Then the ringtone of her smartphone jolted her out of her wonderful dreams.

"Speak!" barked Cindy gruffly after answering the call. The hairs on the back of her neck suddenly stood up and for some uncanny reason, her instincts literally screamed that something was wrong. And so far, Cindy had been able to rely on her instincts. They had made her the kingpin of crime in this town.

"We've got some bad news, Boss," said a concerned female voice hesitantly on the other end of the line. Obviously intimidated by the harsh tone of Cindy's greeting, she took a few extra seconds to tell Cindy everything she needed to know.

Seconds later, a whiskey glass shattered on the wall and glass shards trickled onto a young blonde woman, who cut her hand in bewilderment as she removed a shard. Casually, Cindy gave her a kick as she stormed out of the apartment.

Just a few minutes later, Cindy disregarded all traffic rules as she sped in her Porsche as fast as she could to the announced hospital. Polly was in the passenger seat, and although she considered herself one of the most cold blooded women in town, even she feared for her life on that drive.

Outside the hospital, Cindy parked up the emergency room driveway and rushed with Polly into the heavy orthopedic ward, which smelled of disinfectant and fresh casts. A orange-haired young nurse had the misfortune of just crossing the hallway when Cindy grabbed her by the shoulder and whirled to face her.

"Where's Gemma?" Cindy barked at the nurse.

"Are you close relatives?" the nurse asked in a calm and friendly tone. She didn't seem intimidated in the least.

"Do we look like-" Cindy was about to throw a tantrum when Polly kicked her in the shin and placed a hand gently on her shoulders.

"We're Gemma's sisters," she smiled as Cindy relaxed at her touch. After a moment, she added. "Half-sisters, to be exact. Different fathers, you know."

"I see!" said the nurse slowly, and she let the glance of her green eyes wander suspiciously from Cindy to Polly.

Then she shrugged and relented. "Please follow me!"

Just a few steps later, they entered a room with a huge hospital bed containing a human body in an enormous full body cast. Even Cindy had to swallow in embarrassment, for the female figure with two big bumps on her chest was not only wrapped from head to toe in an absurdly thick plaster cast, but her arms and legs were suspended in crazy positions in a variety of loops and traction devices above the bed. A pure white plaster helmet covered her entire head, leaving only two small holes for her nostrils and mouth. The plaster cast ran seamlessly across her neck over the rest of her body.

Of her arms, which initially protruded from her torso at shoulder level and were bent in various directions at the elbows, only the tips of her fingers were exposed. Similarly, her legs were stuck in super-thick, long leg casts, bent at the knee and allowing only a glimpse of the tips of her toes.

"Are you telling me that's Gemma?" Cindy couldn't believe her eyes and there was an underlying threat in her words.

"Cin..." began Polly in a soft voice. "Just look at that nail polish! It's really her!"

And realizing that Cindy was turning pale and her legs wobbly, she slid a chair under her butt and had her sit down.

"What happened? Where's Dr. Laura?" asked Polly the nurse.

"Oh, you know Dr. Laura!" The nurses' eyes widened in surprise. "I don't know, what happened to her. We just found the girl named Gemma this morning and .... Her body was badly mangled. We did our best for her. And... Dr. Laura... Was..." The nurse's words fell silent.

"Go on!" pleaded Cindy impatiently, seeming to have regained her temper.

A huge glass window separated the ICU hallway from the room where Cindy and Polly's loyal physician lay. She wasn't just a doctor to them, she was their friend, and the sight of her made Cindy and Polly feel sad, thoughtful, and also.... vengeful.

Granted, compared to Gemma in her extra-thick all encompassing full body cast, Dr. Laura seemed comparatively less catastrophic. Her two long arm casts, bent at the elbows, and her two long leg casts, bent at the knees, hung in traction devices over bed so that only her back, lying in a minerva plaster cast, touched the bed. On the face recess of her head cast sat an oxygen mask to help her breathe as best she could while unconscious.

"She was hit by a truck on her way home last night," the orange-haired nurse explained.

"A truck..." Cindy repeated tonelessly.

"The impact pushed her over the railing of a bridge..." the nurse continued.

"A bridge..." muttered Cindy.

"And there she fell into the trough of a cattle ranch." The nurse cleared her throat. "That probably saved her life."

Cindy fought back tears in her eyes. She had felt so secure that she had gained dominion over this town. And now this has happened. Gemma and Dr. Laura! Two of her most loyal girls. This couldn't be a coincidence. This was a declaration of war. She looked to the side and read Polly's face for bewilderment and a hint of uncertainty.

Finally, Polly felt Cindy's gaze rest on her. They both looked silently into each other's eyes for a few seconds. Polly saw Cindy's anger, but also fear. And Cindy seemed to want to secure Polly's support in whatever was going to happen. Finally, sighing, Cindy turned to the nurse. "Lucy, you're Lucy, aren't you?"

The nurse smiled wryly and tapped herself against a name tag on her chest, "Yes, my name is Lucy."

"I want you to take good care of Gemma and Dr. Laura. You seem like someone who is not easily intimidated. If you don't let anyone but the two of us near them, it will pay off very well!" The next moment, she held out a package of bills to Lucy.

"Yes..." Lucy's eyes were wide as she looked at the money and took it carefully, as if it were as fragile as a raw egg. "Yes, I will."

Polly looked surprised for a moment, and the thought, "Well, it's not like there are any bones left to break" popped into her head. But she'd better keep it to herself. If not, she'd throw another tantrum at Cindy, which she'd pay for with at least one plastered limb.

Back in the car, Cindy gritted her teeth. "There's someone attacking us, trying to bring down my empire," she said.

"My henchgirls went to Gemma's house, but they said they didn't find anything," Polly said. "What do you want us to do, Boss?"

"I need to get my head straight, Polly. Let's go to our safe house and make plans."
