Tutorial 94 - The Horizon Line

Here's a really simple tip to give you some composition and perspective options, which can have dramatic effects on a character in a story, for instance.

The character in the image on the left appears somewhat less heroic than in the image on the right. The middle image, somewhere in between. This is mostly communicated through the feeling of being above, below or level with the character's eye line.

Note, these three images can be presented sequentially:

The first image

Our character is beginning her journey, afraid and vulnerable looking. Lifting the horizon means our eye-line is above the character's eye-line. We feel taller than the character. Perhaps she is not feeling as strong as she could be.

The second image

She is half way through her journey, overcoming obstacles on her path. With the horizon placed just below the eye line we feel on par with the character, we are together, seeing eye to eye as equals.

The third image

She has completed her journey and realized her potential. With the horizon dropped way below the eye line, she feels beyond us, we admire her, literally looking up to her or even fearing her.
