Tutorial 55 - Planes of the Nose

There's so much to say about the nose, it deserves a number of tutorials, and that's before we even consider the variety of noses out there. The nose gives so much character to a face, so it's worth drawing as many different kinds as you can. There are as many different shapes and sizes as there are faces so it's not easy to pick a nose for a tutorial like this as many noses simply won't display the same kinds of plane changes. It pays off to sit and study the nose and the inspect your own in a mirror and by touch while looking at images or your reflection. It's amazing to realise that though we look at our noses daily in the mirror we never really see it for what it is, probably because it's so complex. Curves and crevices, bumps and edges, it appears to be crafted out of clay. The best we can do is try to break it down into parts. The nasal bone extending to septal cartilage supporting fleshy parts which gradually merge into the cheeks. Wing-like forms curve into a crevice above the mouth to form the nostrils. From profile, the extension begins just below the brow, reaching out slightly as the nasal bone, before dipping a little as the septal cartilage, then swooping up again a little to form the tip, which could just as well be cube or diamond shaped as spherical. From the tip we go vertically down a touch and then back towards the nostrils, underneath as the nasal spine and then just before we reach the face there is a small horizontal edge and then we drop vertically.

All that, just for a nose!
