Tutorial 54 - Simple vs. Complex

The simple and the complex are two concepts we can try to understand and reflect on in our work.

The simple is powerful in it's singular statement. Easy to understand, a simple line can communicate an idea, feeling or emotion instantly.

In contrast, the complex is powerful in it's variety and detail, we can get pleasantly lost in the forage for information.

Together, these two concepts can provide story, or narrative if combined well.

The simple is usually read first and can provide a structure or base to the image as a whole. The simple is the gesture, the general direction. It is the hook that catches our senses, but the complex holds our attention and invites us to investigate further adding richness and texture.

In many interesting poses we might notice a simple line, usually on one side of the body which tends to 'hold' or support the detailed side, like a vessel.

Both simple and complex are mutually supportive of one another and we should try to be aware of and harmonise them.

Maybe what the eye is really looking for is a place to rest and a place to play.

There are many practices and concepts in art that relate to or mirror life very closely, and this one is worth pondering.
