You'd be surprised how many warrior clans brought heads or ears/noses for these reasons.

I've sadly discovered that the majority of society acts this way, feigning goodness and expecting you to make sacrifices but when compromise comes up they quickly drop the mask and attack to try ensure only you lose something.

If there's one thing this episode (and several others) teaches, it's that Gon isn't a good person, his moral compass can be summed up as "I only care about someone if they're my friend," which is especially problematic since he doesn't seem to care about being friends with people who are more than questionable.

In the Manga Hisoka decapitated the guy who paralyzed Gon, and only brought back his head when approaching Gon to give him the badge.
