Hiii today's grouping of secret sketches is small, showcasing just a few assets that were discarded from A Line Can Go Anywhere: The Brilliant, Resilient Life of Artist Ruth Asawa (full title, it's a mouthful) as well as some sketches I was working on for Yeah, maybe which is the podcast Leigh Ellexson and I are working on together. A little more on both:
The assets I've had to drop entirely/redo into something completely different from the Ruth Asawa book are mostly because the text changed in very late stages. It's a bummer for me, the illustrator, since I have to completely scrap final artwork that I really enjoyed--but this happens sometimes. For example: the gourds were all changed to melons and cabbages seeing as the publisher/author/editor found out Ruth's family didn't actually grow gourds on the farm.
I ended up loving the edits/new illustrations I made, so it's not a big deal. But you guys get to see what existed in its place previously!
The Yeah, maybe idea featured ended up turning into something else--in the middle of designing this one, I decided I wanted to go an entirely different direction. This doesn't mean I won't end up using these little sticker-style drawings for something else down the line though. I was also playing with a lot of hand lettering options, three of which are shown here. We don't know when the first official episode will be out publicly, but it may or may not be an in-person episode....? (because I physically can't stay away from leigh and I will drive 4.5 hours at any given moment to see her)
