June ☆彡Secret Sketches☆ミ Batch #1

Hellooo! I'm writing from you feeling excited, nervous, relieved and a little dumbfounded because today I just finished sketching all 158 pages of Disney-Hyperion's ARDEN HIGH: TWELFTH GRADE NIGHT !! You guys know how I have been crunching for this deadline and never thought I'd see the end. It's surreal that I just sketches my first ever graphic novel all the way through. We'll talk a lot more about all that later this month, though. Here we have some select secret sketches including some sketchbook work, a Mushroom Rain crop, some concept/fashion stuff for the Twelfth Grade Night kids, and some full sketch pages of Twelfth Grade Night!

I actually just got a small editorial job for a local magazine today (I hesitated because yes--I am already pretty booked) and the turnaround is fast: three finished illustrations in a week, sketches are due this Thursday. It's crazy, yeah. But I know what I'm getting into. I'm actually pretty excited because these are going to be poster-style environment paintings of local nature spots in Appalachia. They offered $1500, I argued for $2000, and they came back with $1750, unable to offer more. It's not a lot, but to be frank the reason I took it is because I just want to draw some freaking stalactites!! I have also been craving illustration jobs that are not book work lately, so this will be an awesome little change of pace, you know? A work refresh like this is sometimes what we need. Anyways--that's really an aside. Please enjoy this batch of sketches!

Of course! I don’t know if you’ve seen but I share how much I make on every single job in past newsletters (including the graphic novel, my agent’s cut, picture books, book covers etc.!)

Jamie, thank you so so much for sharing the price of the editorial job! I know future jobs and things like that make it difficult to share those things, but I’m always nervous about being taken advantage of. Having a couple numbers floating around in my head for various jobs helps 💛

I LOVE THIS, if this graphic novel isn’t available in mexico i won’t survive 😭 thank you for always being vulnerable with us jamie! i hope you get to rest and do that traveling🥰💚

I have the same thoughts about wanting to travel alone with just me, myself and my sketchbook for a week and not speak out loud unless I have to speak. I also feel like I can't do that right now either. Your Twelfth Grade Night sketches are so good and engaging.

Thank you so much for sharing your payment offer and negotiation with us!! It’s such valuable info that helps us all price ourselves correctly! Also those sketches are 😍😍😍!

The pages looks a-ma-ZIIING!! I hope you get the chance to rest a bit, and have fun with the environment paintings :)

Thanks for looking out for me and my work-crazy brain J--definitely going to put the work down...eventually. I'm thinking of these next few illustrations as my "pleasure" work. I do see a few days off here and there in my future luckily--and while I'm still working on two other books at the moment while waiting graphic novel sketch feedback, I think this week will be relatively calm. You're the best!!

Love this look into your sketches! Congrats on reaching that big sketch deadline! Comics are fun but they are also SO MUCH WORK and these look great. I'm excited to read it. While some good old Appalachian caving sounds awesome, I hope you get a chance to catch your breath soon! Keep up the hard work, but then put it down!
