This was a substantially more challenging episode to research than the first part of this series, in large part because there's no singular book on the subject of post-Edo whaling. I had to combine a lot of sources focused on pre- and post-1945, and as a result this is one of the longest bibliographies for a single episode that I've ever put together. If this is a subject that interests you, I highly recommend diving into some of the sources contained here; there's plenty more to read.
It was also a really interesting episode to write. In particular, I didn't know that much about the structure of the IWC and did not realize the extent to which the organization has changed from its original function. The shift towards imposing a moratorium on whaling is a tremendous example of the power of long-term, effective political mobilization to shape policy! I was also not aware of the leading role the US played in pushing the moratorium through.
All in all, this was a fascinating episode to put together! I hope folks enjoy it.
