Week 31 progress update

I started the week working on improving the TikTok video I published last week and making it ready to be published on YouTube. In particular, I played with Gimp and learnt a few tricks. My aim was to put together a thumbnail for the video. I hear this is quite important for YouTube. The result is attached to this post.

Also, while doing this I found that saturating the colours in the thumbnail gave a better looking image, so I implemented a saturation filter in the game and re-recorded the video with that. I think the improvement is noticeable. Colours look more vivid, both on my PC screen and my mobile screens.

I scheduled the video to be published on YouTube on Friday, as I understand the weekend is the best time to publish videos on YouTube. One hour or so after it went live, however, I decided to remove it. I found out that YouTube wasn’t showing the thumbnail on the mobile app. I suspect the issue was due to the thumbnail being 16:9, as recommended by YouTube, while the video used a 9:16 aspect ratio. After some hesitation, I decided to re-work the video for the 16:9 aspect ratio. It is extra work, but not much compared to the effort I already put on it.

I spent the remaining time in the week bootstrapping the game. This included quite a bit of engine work. I guess this is the right time to clean up things and invest time on changes that will make my life a bit easier in the coming months, taking on board the lessons learnt so far.
