Rifled slugs are misunderstood - again

Weather for the last week was rainy and now it's foggy so I wasn't able to film anything this week.   However,  Nick Ross sent me a cool patent for the Foster slug and again I am starting to get comments from viewers saying "rifled slugs aren't rifled,  the ribs are so they will swage through a choke"  It's like a zombie invasion of misinformation.   I figured out a way to clock the rotation of the slug in an easy to digest way.   thanks again -  it's ok to reduce your Patreon support by the way!

wait a doggon second here. are you telling me i could have joined his patreon for a dollar ???? lmao! best science channel ever in mho!

I think you can see that the spin rate is constant from muzzle to target, I don't get the impression it's starting without rotation then angularly accelerating. Some witness marks on the base of the slug would show that for certain though.

I'm curious about the mechanics of imparting the spin. If the ribs are flattened by obturation force and pressure against the barrel wall, it's hard to see how spin is imparted. It might be interesting to compare HSC-revealed slug spin rates in flight - fired through a cylinder bore barrel - for a bare slug from a paper (high friction) hull, a plastic (low friction) hull, and a slug contained in a shot cup/sleeve. The latter would show whether or not the spin is really from aerodynamic force after leaving the muzzle, rather than internal ballistic force. The former might show that the spin starts within the shotshell. Just a thought.

I Firmly believe you're worth the $1 a month that I send you through Patron, well Actually your worth more than that but that's all I can afford at this time!!! πŸ€ πŸ‘
