My mom and I thought it'd be cool to check out a couple older American boy-bands. We've tackled quite a bit of K-pop so it was also interesting to see some of the differences here.

Itโs really interesting to talk about classic boy/girl bands vs kpop groups. The dancing is a HUGE part of why they struggle to compete. And TBH not all kpop groups are insane dancers but the one thing pretty much all internationally successful kpop groups have in common is that they either have a crazy dance line or are super strong all around dancewise in comparison to even other kpop groups. The best dancers among the good dancers fare better overall. Itโs not just international, the groups from small companies that break out in kpop (bts, ateez, etc) are often groups that have a dance advantage.
Then thereโs full package of kpopโ Dancing, singing, rapping, crazy stages, fashion, visuals/aesthetic, huge M/Vs, the abundance of content, and usually double/triple the music output. Furthermore, itโs so hard to cover as many bases as a single kpop group does. Many of them play instruments, have a separate art related hobby, do modelling, vlog, act, stream etc so their audience pool is very diverse in terms of what people are in it for compared to traditional boy bands.
And they can release solo music without the band going to shit because of jealousy. Since most Kpop idols go into the trainee process intending to and wanting to be in a group and not soloistsโif a member gets super popular, them ditching the group instead of just doing both isnโt as much of an insecurity.
But a couple of companies are making โglobal groupsโ and training them like kpop idols so itโll be interesting to see how that plays out. An LA based girl group called VCHA just debuted under JYPE and a HYBE global gg is also in the works.
Also kpop groups can and do use handheld mics!! Rappers usually do it from debut and by the time the group is more experienced, usually the entire group will use a handheld. It seems like most groups get a choice based off of preference. Theyโre just really good at making sure it doesnโt limit them and are trained to practice down to those details๐ค
