You were right when you said Zayn was looking out for Harry. I think he was really protective of him as well as Niall and there were several moments where you can notice that. He knew very well the image the media had created of Harry and how uncomfortable he felt with all those questions being asked over and over again. One example is in this interview with all the boys (actually Zayn and Harry interact quite a bit and also Zayn is more talkative): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_b5_H1LfCkg If you're not going to watch it, skip to minute 5:10. The inteviewer points at Harry and says "Oh you're the womanizer, right? You're the guy who likes the laides?" And Zayn says to the interviewr: "Nah, he's a nice guy" and then just puts an arm around him and says to him "I know the real you".

From my understanding, it probably had to do with management and how they were being treated more than anything. They were very overwhelmed with everything while being overworked and it became super unhealthy and they were unhappy. I’m not a big 1D fan but I’m pretty certain it was external factors that made it impossible for them.

I have never really been into 1D, even when I was a little younger, but seeing this dynamic through your analysis is really interesting. Just from these two interviews I can see they have chemistry and a comfortable friendship, so I think the breakup of of the group had less to do with the boys dynamic with each other and just the natural desire to branch out and do your own thing which is healthy anyway. Loved it, very interesting to see.
