2024-02-07 02:36:39 +0000 UTCMy "purpose in life" found *me* when I received a surprise invitation in 1988 to something called a "furry party" at a local sci-fi convention. (The very first one outside of LA where furry was born.) I know I go on "furry furry furry," but at Anthro New England last month several people thanked me (as others have in the past) for my books "Furry Nation" and "Furry Planet" helping them overcome whatever guilt/shame they felt about being furry. It jogged a memory I'd had since high school when I was first realizing how deeply I was fascinated by anthropomorphism, and how I felt I couldn't admit my "weirdness" to anyone. (Of course this was decades before the internet and furry fandom even existed.) I remember thinking at the time, "there has to be some reason I'm into this" - and at ANE I realized the reason I wondered about back then was to eventually help people conquer the same shame and guilt I felt in high school; it felt really good knowing something I created helped people get past a roadblock in their own lives.
