Recess through the 7th grade!

James Noury

This happened at work, so it is safe. The company I worked 30+ years for started out as part of Prentice-Hall, then Maxwell McMillan, then Research Inst. of America, then Warren, Gorham & Lamont, then Thomson, then, finally, Thomson-Reuters. (Made resumes an interesting procedure.) Anyway. Just a few months after I started there, the company was introducing some new products (They published tax law books. Yeah, I know) and they decided to give the employees a chance to come up with a slogan. The prize(s) were $500 if they liked it, and $1000 if they decided to actually use it. I was just starting there and making about 15k/year, so, $1000 was definitely a draw. I kinda let it ramble around in the back of my head, and I scribbled a few ideas. Then on the deadline day, in fact only hours before the deadline, as I thought about what it was that people actually came to us for, I wrote down "for your information", with the 'your' in italics. They liked it, and even used it. While that was great, and fun, I get even more joy out of thinking that I was paid $1000 for writing 3 words. So, $300+ a word. I will probably never make that much a word again ever, but I did do it once. Still giggle about it now and then.
