My Cage "Classic" 08/25/2009

CORRECTION: Norm and Bridget's new son is actually named Kevin. I'd originally written Kenny in the new strip, despite having planned for years on his name being Kevin. Being corrected, but wanted to avoid confusion. Sorry about that!

Sally and Kevin are named after two toys my kids named when they were very young.

QotD: What TV, movie, or book series went on for too long? When should they have ended it? Why?

Originally run Aug 25th 2009.

Yeah, getting rid of Robert Hewitt Wolfe as showrunner was a HUGE mistake. The fact that you can tell the EXACT episode the change happened is telling. (And as lackluster as season 3 and 4 were, they were friggin' gold compared to whatever season 5 was supposed to be...)

Brian Perler

Above all else...Dune. Once Arrakis got water it should have been done. Frank Herbert just got so strange with his sequels and the ones co-written by his son and Kevin Anderson were just sad in comparison. Dune was readable and exciting. The plot was engaging, made sense and flowed. A classic case of excellence captured in a flash of lightning and never repeated.

Steven Sutton

I've read the ideas the showrunners had for the later seasons, before Sorbo took over and they were interesting to say the least (Tyr becoming chief of the combined Nietchzean prides, Harper taking over The Consensus Of Parts, Rev Bem taking over the Wayists...)

The Simpsons and South Park go without saying. The Xanth novels. I tapped out about a half-dozen novels ago. Allegedly, there's going to be a Toy Story 5. Which either means an entire movie without Woody or without Buzz. Miss me with both options.

The Office should have ended when Steve Carell left the show. It tanked hard and fast without him. Spongebob Squarepants should have been allowed to end with the first movie like the creator wanted. The Big Bang Theory could have been a couple seasons shorter. The Simpsons...well, I haven't watched it in years, but it has sadly been a shadow of its original great self for decades now. Looking back on the show, Heroes should have just called it quits after season 1.

I agree about M*A*S*H. Got really preachy and sanctimonious towards the end. Took me about ten years to finally watch the series finale. Not their finest moment.

I disagree with JoeStrike, then I agree with him. The Simpsons is obviously still mining cash for the producers and cast. This might be because as old wiewers get tired of the show, new gnerations of children and young ad

All In the Family; dealt with social issues in a comedic way then dragged on and became less comedic and more sappy.

M*A*S*H - last several seasons were very lame & wimpy, show lost all its bite & became an emo festival. However, I'm surprised no one's mentioned the worst offender ofthem all, a show that should've been cancelled at LEAST ten years ago - that fun-filled wacky Springfield family, we all know who they are. Last couple of time I tried watching it, it was embarrassing, like visiting an old friend who'd gone senile.

JoeStrike

Also, glad you corrected Kevin's name. I suspect that even now the MyCage conspiracy page on the dark web is engendering theories of how the new child is actually Max's offspring, and not Norm's. Brrrrr!

Jon Benson

Admitting that I am a curmudgeon, I apologize for anything in the following that may come across as offensive, no matter how much the subjects may deserve it, = -) Harry Potter, in all its forms. The last season of Babylon 5 (recognizing that they originally told J. Michael Straczynski that they weren't going to let him HAVE the fifth season). STTNG. Personally, I would never even have greenlit this one had I had a say in it. It was so politically correct as to be dysfunctional. How do you justify allowing there to be families, with children and all the necessary accoutrements, aboard what is essentially a warship (I know, I know, it was on a "peaceful" mission--"we come in peace--fire proton torpedos"). It took three people to replace Spock. Picard had to have a committee to decide anything. And the ship itself was so big and had so many distractions on it, it was like a mall in space.

Jon Benson

Ah, you've killed Kenny! :D

John

That was one of many issues. I think they put together their Confederation too fast as well. And there was so much more wrong...I couldn't even finish S3.

Jack Beckman

Lost.

Bob Alexander

Amen. Getting rid of Tyr was a big mistake. I think Kevin Sorbo was jealous that Tyr was a better character than Hunt, and the actor was phenomenal.

Bob Alexander

QotD: Andromeda. Good for about 2 seasons, then a rapid downhill in Season 3.
