As long as we're talking about novels about comics, here's a trilogy I really enjoyed; you might want to check out if you haven't come across it already: (From Wikipedia:) "[Tom] De Haven's novels include the Funny Paper trilogy ("Funny Papers" (1985), "Derby Dugan's Depression Funnies" [cover & faux 1930's comic strip page by Art Spiegelman] (1996) and Dugan Under Ground (2001). The trilogy's storyline stretches from the beginnings of the newspaper comic strips in the 1890s to the [underground comics of the] 1970s."
