My Cage "Classic' 06/03/2009

Who would you want to be the narrator for a documentary about you? What would the documentary be titled?

Again, got in late. Garrison Keillor. His voice would just fit what my life has been.

Steven Sutton

Sir David Attenborough, done in the style of one of his nature documentaries. A good title, "Homo Sapiens Screwballiensis".

Yer pal Mikey

My documentary would be called "The Kid in the Candy Store" because I grew up in one my folks ran until I was 13. It would have to be narrated by the late Jean Shepherd, the author and narrator of "A Christmas Story." Shepherd had a radio show I listened to every night when I was a kid; he would comment on things & tell all sorts of stories about his past. (A lot of which I learned when I interviewed him years later were mostly apocryphal.) A lot of those stories eventually coalesced into "A Christmas Story."

Oh yeah, I loved that film, so wonderfully tacky - and when you're 10 years old it's the coolest thing on Earth! (In fact I was quite surprised when I learned Japan also made "regular" and "artistic" movies, not just the monster & sci-fi movies they ran at Saturday afternoon kids' matinees (when such a thing existed.)

I agree with your evaluation of the 1998 version and, yes, it had a very bad rap. I saw it in its second week and, including the two of us, there were 7 people in the 7:30 showing. Side note: Raymond Burr's participation was added when the original movie was aimed at the American market. Tangent: Ever see “The Mysterians”? The first color movie produced by Toho Studios and also the first with aliens.

I rewatched the original 1954 Godzilla film the other day and realized two things. First, the original is probably the best version out there. In it's day it must have been terrifying to watch. It had none of the campy monster fights of all the sequels, and was, in fact, very dark. The second thing I realized was that the 1998 version follows the original more closely than any of the others. (No idea why it gets such a bad rap.) Ok, so to the question at hand. Raymond Burr did most of the narration for the original movie. And I think if we could re-animate him, he'd be my choice for the person to narrate my life. (Then again, I also liked Ringo Starr as Mr. Conductor.) The title would be "Music and Rhyme for Connoisseurs of Verbal Abuse." If I had to pick a living narrator (I know Ringo's still alive, but he's not a professional narrator.) it would be a guy named Richard Armitage, whose narration talent can be sampled here: https://www.audible.com/blog/article-best-british-narrators The first four words he says, "Drunk, full of righteous fury..." won me over.

Maybe Paul Giamatti. And it could be the same title as my webcomic: "Downscale."
