I rememebr a newspaper sedning our sydicate at the time a letter they got about 'My Cage' complaning that it looked like a strip children might read but the animals drank and had tattoos. Never heard a peep about these strips though.

Wow, kinda surprised they got away with that "gelding" joke in an Hanna-Barbera cartoon. (Then again IIRC the show was syndicated to local stations instead of being broadcast by a network where a "Standards & Practices" dept. might've caught it. My favorite moment along those lines was when Darkwing Duck destroyed a case of lightbulbs stolen by Megavolt, who responded "I'm tired of you always busting my bulbs!" I definitely never expected to hear a line like that during "The "Disney Afternoon" :-))

When I think about it now, even from strips around when I was really young, I don't see many, if any, specifically aimed at kids. Not that I didn't read all of them, but really they were crafted with the idea that adults would be reading them. Everything from Archie to Ziggy is written, it seems to me, to attract a grown-up audience. (Even animated stuff. I remember my father laughing at a Peter Potamus cartoon where a pirate with a sword was chasing PP threatening to "make a gelding" out of him. )

Yeah, so many people associate anthros with kid stuff, or at least kid-friendly stuff. It must be less of an issue in the wake of "Bojack Horseman."
