Having a policy class that is on self interested, and stoke division. A bot that automatically does stock trades … … by identifying trades being done by US politicians … … who probably have inside (I.e. and thus basically illegal-to-act-upon) knowledge of market-moving government info … … and doing the same trades He’s up 20% since May 2022 https://www.threads.net/@quiverquantitative/post/CzcB-Gsgqow/?igshid=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ%3D%3D

2023-11-11 03:29:07 +0000 UTCI am glad y’all addressed the problematic parts of that article. I have very similar concerns about it that you guys spoke of. I will say that I have Dysthymia, which is persistent depressive episodes that have small portions of time that are less intense. I will say I am never as “mean” as I am when I’m in an intense depressive episode. It’s better now bc I can tell a bit better when I’m in that headspace and avoid it better than in the past. It still happens though. Just my own anecdotal experience.

2023-11-10 21:44:08 +0000 UTCI wanted to expand on Tom’s comment regarding teaching social skills as part of a new curriculum in schools. I am a speech language pathologist assistant. People think my job only comprises of working with kids with language regarding their sounds and grammar, but what people don’t realize is that social language has become a very, very large part of what I work on with students these days. Literally at least half of my caseload comprises of students with goals such as (I’m paraphrasing here) “Student will observe verbal and nonverbal behaviors within a conversation to gauge the degree of interest the conversation partner has in a topic…” or “Student will initiate a conversation with the purpose to resolve a problem or self advocate for help in class…”, or “Student will infer the emotional state of an individual given a brief narrative, image, or video sample of an event and provide support for their answer…” There has been a massive paradigm shift with regard to treating students on the autism spectrum, and it has affected how we write goals. The old goals would be something like, “Student will engage in a conversation topic of a non-preferred interest in x/x opportunities.” This is a very shitty goal because it basically says the interests of the student are not preferred and, therefore one could infer, uninteresting and unworthy to even talk about. The paradigm is based more on inclusive concepts such as neurodiversity. A lot of the conversation therapy and social language therapy materials are intended for people on the autism spectrum, and although it’s tremendously helpful to those individuals I think it’s absurd they’re only impressed upon autistics. Everyone could benefit from these lessons which are based on some of the exact things you listed such as how to genuinely apologize, or how to give constructive feedback.

2023-11-09 18:45:58 +0000 UTCAnother great long form episode gents!!! As an outsider looking in (Aussie living in New Zealand) I really feel like you nailed it as an ‘individualism’ difference between the US and other privileged countries. I really feel like collectivism is a key component to the ‘happiness index’. Here and in Australia, that individualism is creeping in but government structures contain it significantly. Unfortunately there is no quick fix! So that feeling needing a solution at the end is just not going to happen. But I will say this - don’t be so hard on yourselves- because you are doing the leg work to build community! It’s a literal outcome of your podcasting- and the segue to Vulgarity for Charity proves the point. I understand wanting to do more - but it’s important to recognise that you are part of the solution already! Keep up the good work!

2023-11-09 04:53:57 +0000 UTCOkay, I don't know if you read these, but AmeriCorps is the non-religious volunteer thing you're talking about. It has programs suitable for between school and college, professional level programs, and programs for seniors. The problem with AmeriCorps and why you might not know is that it's brutally underfunded and the stipend (thanks to the Clinton-era Republicans) is literally set to poverty wages, so the only people who can do it are those who can take that hit. But even with that limit its a great program that is one of the best returns on investment for our tax dollars. (My wife works heavily with them so I had to speak up...)
