I don't think team sports are the be-all, end all. Gymnastics classes, swim classes, rock climbing--that's all stuff that teaches someone practical skills and confidence for having a body for the long-term. I want to make that happen for my kid, and I can without a lot of pressure and guilt. I was horrible at team sports and bullied a lot for it throughout my childhood, so I'm not inclined to see that as an opportunity for my kid that can't be replaced with something better. And in practicality, we don't own a car and my health issues interfere a lot with my being able to make significant time commitments. It would be completely impossible for us to manage the over-the-top demands of kids' team sports, and we have higher priorities anyway. As a nerdy kid who grew up into a nerdy adult I also have a rant about how overvalued sports are in our society. We were journalism kids and drama kids, and no one got a letterman jacket for that, even though it involved teamwork and performing and skill and practice and we won awards for the school. In terms of parental commitment all other activities are wildly different. Dave Barry reminisces about how much of his life he happily spent on the sidelines of his daughter's soccer games--chatting, enjoying the weather (Florida), being friends with the other parents, enjoying the game, relaxing. Good for him! But for parents who don't feel the same it would make so much more sense to have the parental investment expectations of drama or journalism, where the parent comes to see the play and reads the published articles but doesn't have to show up for several practices and games a week. I have a friend who is doing this for a couple of kids--football, hockey and wrestling--and she is exhausted and miserable about it.

All right, that made me laugh.
