Book Club Part 2 (Rise of the Warrior Cop)

This is the second and final installment of our book club discussion for Rise of the Warrior Cop by Radley Balko. We will be posting a separate thread early next month to have the patrons decide on our next book.

We hope you enjoy this discussion, and please let us know your thoughts in the comments.

If you manage to survive the raid, then you have police pretending to be the "on-duty" defense lawyer who advise you to "agree" (confess) and since you're innocent, it will come out in the end and you'll walk free. Confession, of course, is the ultimate sign of guilt, with the retraction of a confession being even further proof of guilt. (The WP did an expose on this about 12-15 years ago.)

I suppose they could do like here in the UK, send a sternly worded letter (meaning, they left out the word "please").

I haven't read it yet, but I did hear an excellent deep-dive interview with the author on the RevLeft podcast. It looks like they are starting to use it here now.

The Jakarta Method by Vincent Bevins is also a fantastic analysis about the CIA handing hitlists to corrupt gov'ts around the world in their anti-communism crusade. By proxy, they eliminated communists, sympathizers, suspected sympathizers and opponents - communist or not - of extranational businesses raping their country.

For consideration in the next book club, how about "Errand Into the Wilderness of Mirrors". It's about the CIA's first stumbling effeorts into manipulating religion to further the national security interests of the US. https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/E/bo80657461.html

Friendly reminder: being a pizza delivery driver is more dangerous than being a cop.

Bra Straps and Bitch Slaps

In the States in which I've lived in Australia (Qld & NSW) they've both had past experiences about them being the finest police force money can buy. In both cases there have been subsequent government inquiries which have uncovered a lot of corruption and put a number of people in jail. The current approach in NSW is to get in older people from the myriad of backgrounds that make up the Australian population who have had life experience to be trained as police officers. When they interact with the public (who they are paid to protect) it massively reduces the chance of it escalating to violence because they're not ignorant youngsters imagining they're Dirty Harry. The police here are armed. Being fairly sure that almost all other people aren't means they are initially always working from a helpful rather than a purely defensive view.

Cheney would pull votes from Biden/other Dems. Center right voted for Biden in 2020

Animal cruelty is a big, fat fucking NOPE from me. Can't do it. Catch you on the next one. ❤️

I honestly don't know. I work on the engineering side of roadwork.

I don't know how true it is but I've been told the point of traffic enforcement is primarily visual inspection of the car contents

As far as traffic enforcement - yeah. In my state DOT we're looking at installing speed cameras in lieu of paying for more police units. Red light cameras are old news, and silly things like wider paint lines help keep people from cheating HOV and toll lanes.

While my wife and I were living near Fed Ex Field (no longer available for military housing) we heard some shootings. We call the cops, they told us they don’t come out that way at night. My wife said “but you have guns,” they replied “yeah, but so does everyone else out there. Y’all stay safe now” and hung up on us.

I love the new book club focused on good books. I have no concern about reading assignment to understand the conversation. It would be potentially nice to have shorter chunks and allow for more input from the Patreon audience. Maybe via open ended questions and a dedicated email? Or something similar. I know Patreon itself doesn't lend itself to much of a communication platform
