The bill has wiggle room so a teacher can say that teenagers knowing about being gay is inappropriate. The K-3 thing is misleading so they can pretend they are saving 8 year olds from "sex" "education"... because being gay is only about fucking the wrong person.

Came here to comment about agreeing that school lunches should be free to everyone... and here's another reason why:
I grew up as a "reduced" lunch kid. My parents made just above the "free" financial threshold (which is fucking ridiculous). In the 90's kids could volunteer in the public school kitchen, and lunch was included, so I did that. In high school we had a lot of food choice; the cafeteria food and also a Taco Bell, McDonald's and some pizza chain. As a reduced kid I would bring an apple and a sleeve of saltines. I'd take the packets of hot sauce from Taco Bell, squirt it on my crackers, and chow down. Meanwhile, all of the smells meld in that one space, my friends question me why. "Because I like it." And that was a lie. (Well, a half lie)
I'm sure I'm not the only "reduced" or "full price" kid that dealt with the stigma of a horrible public lunch program.
*Real Quick* Summer lunch programs at our public parks were amazing!! They had meat sandwiches, fresh veggies, fruit, milk and it was free to anyone 18 and younger.
The park employees who ran the program knew the parents who'd bring their children to eat, and would serve parents any extras.

Fun fact: There is one place where poll the audience is not an effective strategy on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire-style shows: Russia. Sociologists think that Russian culture wants to punish unearned wealth, so Russians are unwilling to help a stranger win money, so they often intentionally guess wrong.

Libraries are one of the only places where you can just hang around in public without spending money. That makes them very important to civic life.

Hey, first off, I completely agree with you about the indispensable value of libraries. Some of my favorite memories as a kid and teenager involve long afternoons spent sitting and reading in my local library. I spent many dozens of Saturday afternoons happily alone at the library. When I would visit my Mom as a kid, she would hand over her library card so we had a place to go and something to do while she worked. I absolutely adore the library.
My comments, which were clumsy, really meant to speak not to the actual value of libraries, but to the weird declaration of them as a battleground in a culture war. Regardless of what I may feel, the reality is that library visits have been declining for a long time. Hell, overall literacy isn’t doing all that well and people are reading fewer books than the prior generation.
It struck me as disingenuous then for conservatives pearl clutch about what is on offer at a public institution that is, very unfortunately, becoming less utilized rather than more. It makes me wonder if these protesters of library content even use the library themselves. Cynically, I have my doubts.
I really comments on the show probably came off as dismissive of libraries. I don’t feel that way. I recognize their indispensable value and in fact lament that they are not more well attended , funded, and protected.

Thank you Shelley. Exactly what I was thinking. I would add that libraries are also resources and community center for recent immigrants and minority communities. Libraries are a vital resource, especially in low income neighbourhoods.
Giving Tom the benefit of doubt though, I think he was trying to make an off the cuff joke, but it just came off as very privileged and out of touch.

The FL "Don't Say Gay" law is vaguely written stating that you cannot talk about sexual orientation or gender identity to K-3. That not only applies to LGBTQ, but heterosexual identity and sexual orientation as well.

C’mon guys, why are you deriding libraries as if they’re entirely useless? Not everyone has access to affordable high speed internet for e-book reading, has the resources to buy piles of age-appropriate books to own at home, and physical books over screens are necessary for childhood development anyway. The people who use libraries need them the most, and they also serve as community centers for social and educational events. Libraries and public school are two of the most important resources our society provides. I thought you wanted an educated society? Until the internet and social welfare programs provide every resource to every child (we’re going the opposite direction), libraries are a necessary and valuable service for education and equity. We should be supporting librarians, not tearing them down.
