I loved the book club. I work in a library, but I've never been in a book club before. Tom reading DHW is the whole reason I made a Patreon account. I can't tell you how much I appreciate this patron bonus. There are so many books I'd love to hear in the future. "The Family" and "C Street", "The Power Worshippers", anything by David Fitzgerald... the list goes on. Maybe Andrew will give you permission to read "The Founding Myth" if you use it to promote his new book.

I know that means the loss of hearing Tom read the book, :( bummer but I am willing to accept that, in order to hear this book.

2022-02-13 18:12:14 +0000 UTCI second Illumi-Llama. "Knowing What is Real in a World Increasingly Full of Fake" by SGU is a great book. There is an audio version already so there won't be a read aloud component but it's a good primer on modern day critical thinking. The rogues have promoted it as a Demon Haunted World for the 21st century. Other (recent) books that have given me a lot to think about are "How to Talk to a Science Denier" by Lee McIntyre and "The Rightous Mind" by Jonathan Haidt

2022-02-07 20:33:06 +0000 UTCI loved the fuck out of the Book Club, and I enjoyed Tom's reading, but it isn't a requirement. I can find audio books for myself, or read the book. The discussion was the real gem and I got into listening to that. I have a long list of books I would enjoy hearing you discuss, some of which I have sent in email previously. Nonfiction is great, but I'd enjoy fiction as well, especially drawn from my favorite genre of classic SF.

On the other hand, you might actually be able to talk to the author afterwards, which would be amazing. My votes are for either Boys Will Be Boys: Power, Patriarchy and the Toxic Bonds of Mateship by Clementine Ford; or Mediocre: The Dangerous Legacy of White Male America by Ijeoma Oluo. Both cover toxic masculinity, but the latter also covers race and other points of privilege. I really think the next book should be something sociological.

2022-02-07 04:16:38 +0000 UTCThank you so much for doing this. I read along and greatly enjoyed this book. I appreciate the breakdown after each chapter. It gives me a chance to digest the chapter before hearing an outside take on the text. It made me realize that I am probably a lot less critical than I think I am. As for the next book, I would second reading Manufacturing Consent by Herman/Chomsky. Or The Wretched Of the Earth by Frantz Fanon if you want to read about civil rights and anti-colonialism.

Whether I would have the time to read a different book along with you is another matter but I'm sure I would get something out of your conversations about the book regardless. Like Bob mentioned before me, I'm concerned about the legality of reading the book for patrons. Maybe the next book could be something that's either public domain (I'm actually not sure if The Demon Haunted World is public domain) or available as an audiobook.
