My Cage "Classic" 12/12 - 12/13/2007

I was glad when we stopped having Norm lie down at his therapy sessions. I've never been to a therapist where they actually did.

Originally run Dec 12th - 13th 2007.

No. Not intentional.

For a while I was collecting "comic memes", you know, guy on the couch, guy on the desert island, the banana peel gag, etc. They don't really reflect reality, but they seem to go back to the beginning of comics in general, and they are visual icons that seem to be universally understood. They help set up the gag, and help the reader identify the situation, without the artist needing to explain it. And for all their repetition, they have been rendered in almost countless different ways. Bizarro and Farside I often suspected share ownership of the psychiatrist's couch gag. Anyway, pretty much all comics use something like this. MC has the break room, Blondie (Dagwood, really) has the water cooler, or the carpooling, Andy Capp has the pub, the canal, and his hat, Garfield has Mondays and lasagna, and ever since Peanuts, kite eating trees. So, my thought is, that you should be allowed to use whatever meme you want if it makes the strip work better. (Or, discard them if you feel they are too obvious, or overused.)

Yup.

It looks like the rapist!

True, I didn't lie down in my sessions back in the day. It's not conducive to facing the doctor. It may be cartoonist shorthand, but so is the head mirror, which modern physicians don't wear all the time.

Stephen Gilberg

At least it didn't say "PSYCHOTHERAPIST"

No comment on Norm's clothes. I still own a black satin Duran Duran concert jacket

The word "therapist" on the door is written ... a little strangely. Is that intentional?
