*WARNING SPOILERS*
If you haven't yet check out this miniseries on Netflix about Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (Osho). Otherwise be ready for some spoilers. It will still make you want to watch it either way.
Pretty wild story.
I was living in California in the mid 1980s when the Rajneesh incidents occurred. I only remember it from a 60 Minutes piece made before the heavy shit started going down, when the only sensational aspects of it were the multitude of expensive automobiles, the comical appearance of the members dancing, and of course the townspeople conflict. Obviously 60 Minutes had only more like 12 minutes to cover everything, and the final resolution happened later. Compared to Jonestown it was boring, and I don't remember any of that aspect reaching the national news, certainly not in the relative "in depth" coverage that 60 Minutes could offer. Rolling Stone magazine did comprehensive pieces on things LIKE this, but I don't remember them covering it. So I'm not surprised if people don't remember this as being all that significant.

So glad I'm not the only one who for the first two episodes was like "eh, not that bad". Need to finish it at some point. Great review!

It's a great documentary. But, there's no such thing as "garbage land." It was good cattle range and a delicate ecosystem. A city of 15,000 would have been an environmental disaster. There were no good guys in this film in the end. The constitution was trampled. I remember thinking Sheela was a monster back in the day, but I couldn't imagine that I'd find her even scarier at the end of this documentary.

This is footage from the original documentary that was captured by a film crew given unlimited access to the cult. This was filmed while they were still in India. After the 10 minute mark of this excerpt they show the members performing some violent psychotherapeutic role playing sessions. Members are seen to be screaming, punching, kicking each other.
