I think the major benefit of USB over toslink is for someone using it on their computer, they might not have toslink available. So, really, it comes down to options. In theory, there *might* be limitations of what signals are compatible via toslink since SPDIF does have a limited specification, dating back decades. USB, on the other hand, is just data-- it will come down to the various internal controllers, which should be a lot more modern. That said, USB can also be finicky. I had to literally delete the windows driver because it didn't like the JNOG. The Amanero driver, by contrast, works flawlessly.

The DF Red and the JNOG both operate as DACs, with the JNOG offering a lot more options and power (since DACs do act as a preamp)

Also curious on this as I also have a enog2/erish stack and am interested in upgrading to the JNOG. Also is there any noticeable differences between the usb and toslink?

So.... I own a Dragonfly Red and looking to get a $200 or less pair of speakers for my computer. I'm torn between the JBL 104's and Edifier R1700BT. Now that I see this video, do I need this to drive the JBL's / Edifiers instead of the Dragonfly Red?

With your review of the Erish, I know you said there was a limit hit with the ENOG2 in terms of the sound quality, that you could get better sound with other DACs on the Erish Does the JNOG now solve that problem?
