Thank you so much for pursuing this so rigorously. Glad you made some connections with Hesychasm (stillness), the mysticism of the Eastern Church. Athonite monks, like the descenders also prayed with their head bent towards their knees - of “naval gazing” renowned. Perhaps both are picking up on 1 Kings 18:42?
