There's no bad ending to this story... but that doesn't mean it's any easier. To achieve the desired result, you have to go through many tests.

To find the manual, you need to get Matthew out of the fraternity, and to do that, you need to talk to Cody and ask him about the painting club with Matthew. He will take you to the painting studio, where you will see that Matthew is busy posing for them. This is your chance to go to the fraternity and look for the manual.
