Against Regret

Against Regret

Comments

I have some regrets, one being that I studied philosophy instead of computer science, but then I remember how much better my intellectual life became due to philosophy. For a long time, I didn't believe that philosophy could help me deal with various problems in life. And indeed, philosophy can't relieve physical pain, but otherwise, analytic philosophy really helped me go through hard times. Also, due to one of your videos, I started reading Benatar's books and I became a (rather joyful) pessimist, which is one of the best things that ever happened to me. Pessimism is a good protection against regret, indeed.

Which is a good pragmatic reason for rejecting free-will.

Heitor Leal Farnese

Apparently researchers have categorised 36 secrets people keep from others. Regret seems as a second order condition subordinated to arguably a sense of real agency relative to others. So 12 common secrets are thematically categorised : moral secrets, connectedness or intimacy secrets and institutional commitment secrets. Rumination on the outcomes of being caught seems to cause greater stress due to potential ostracism which would be regrettable because it seems subjective choice was real if there is a belief in free-will.
